Month of the Military Child

Military children make up a very special part of our nation’s population as they stand in steadfast support of their military family members. To honor their unique contributions and sacrifices on behalf of our country, each April is designated the Month of the Military Child. The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger, who established the commemoration in 1986. During each April, one day is selected as the day to “Purple Up! for Military Kids” and everyone is encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth. Why purple? Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Space Force blue, and Marine red. This year Purple Up! Day will be celebrated in South Dakota on Friday, April 11, 2025.
