Graphic Novel

This year, Black Hills Reads received 170 entries as part of the Young Writers 3rd Grade Contest as an extension to SD Humanities’ Young Readers One Book (YROB). Third graders submitted either a short story, poem, or comic/graphic novel sample with the themes “What gives you strength ‘like an eagle’?” or “How does the artwork in this story inspire you?” Entries were judged by Edward Jones Volunteers, Coke Bottling Company Volunteers, United Way of the Black Hills Staff and various other Black Hills Reads Volunteers. First place winners in both categories will receive family vouchers to a Rush Hockey game (4), a school visit from the Rush hockey mascot Nugget, and a $100 gift card. Second place winners in each category will receive a $75 gift card and third place a $50 gift card. Honorable Mention Winners will receive $25 gift cards. All students who entered will receive a free entry to a Rush hockey game. All prizes will be distributed within the next two weeks by Black Hills Reads and The Monument. The Black Hills Reads Writing Contest and Young Readers One Book Festival is open to all third graders and takes place each Fall.
